The Impact of 9-11 on Thailand's Tourism Industry by Focusing on the First-Class Hotel Market in BangkokDiplomarbeit, die am 04.08.2002 erfolgreich an einer Fachhochschule in Deutschland im Fachbereich Wirtschaftswissenschaften eingereicht wurde. Abstract: "Sawasdee Khrap" - welcome to the kingdom of Thailand. A number of valid characterizations such as "The Land of Smiles", "The Land of Temples and Pagodas" and "Tropical Vacation Paradise" describe Thailand at its best. In addition to these picturesque synonyms, the kingdom gained international recognition through its growing travel and hospitality industry. In 2001 Thailand once again booked the top spot as most preferred tourist destination in South East Asia as well as runner-up position in all of Asia, second only to China. When Muslim extremists hijacked four domestic U.S. flights and cowardly carried out the terrorist attack of 9-11 on the U.S.A., the global travel sector felt the direct impact of the terrorist attacks like no other industry. From one day to the other tourists decided to stay at or close to home and hotel rooms were left vacant. As major employer and source for foreign exchange earnings, Thailand's tourism industry was no exception to the threat. As the brutality and human tragedy of this incident will always be remembered, the following report will focus solely on the implications for the tourism and hospitality industry. In specific, the text will take an in-depth look at the development of the first class hotel market in Bangkok following the September attacks. The report looks at 14 top hotels of Bangkok and their performance from January 2000 to March 2002. Special attention lies on the seven months following the U.S.A. attacks in September 2001, whereas a full year comparison of 2000 and 2001 will also provide valid information. The tourism and hospitality industry is a major economic driving factor not only for Thailand, but also for many other Asian nations. Therefore, the beginning of this report deals with the regional development after the terrorist attacks. This way th...

Old Books, Rare Friends: Two Literary Sleuths and Their Shared PassionWhen their friendship and business partnership began in the 1940s, Leona Rostenberg and Madeleine Stern were pioneers in a man's world. Now approaching their nineties, the duo, who -- among their many discoveries -- unearthed Louisa May Alcott's pseudonymous blood-and-thunder stories, remain a vibrant institution in the rare book trade, even as the Internet changes their field -- and their community -- forever. After publishing Old Books, Rare Friends, Rostenberg and Stern received a flood of fan mail asking about their personal lives, and they have responded with rare honesty and warmth as they reflect on their lives and their remarkable partnership. Bookends recounts their fascinating histories -- family backgrounds, business adventures, the men they did not marry, and their approach to the bittersweet trials of aging. Yet, more than just a dual memoir, Bookends is also a chronicle of the cultural changes of twentieth-century American life, and a loving farewell to the golden age of book collecting. Filled with wisdom and humor, this volume is a tribute to Rostenberg and Stern's passion for the written word, and for life itself. Above all it is a heart-touching testament to enduring human friendship.
Rudyard Kipling: The Books I Leave BehindEqually adept at humor writing, tales for children, and adventure stories, Rudyard Kipling holds a singular place in the pantheon of great English writers. This book celebrates the Nobel Prize winner’s multifaceted achievements and, with 80 full-color illustrations, underscores the variety and breadth of his printed production. An introductory essay by David Alan Richards, whose extensive Kipling collection is among the finest in the world, traces the challenges and joys of building a Kipling bibliography. Thomas Pinney, emeritus professor of English at Pomona College, contributes an essay on how collecting Kipling reflects the writer’s literary status.
The book is organized chronologically, beginning with Kipling’s birth in India in 1865 and extending to movies, plays, and new editions of his works that have appeared since his death in 1936. The selected items create a time line of his life and popular works, including The Jungle Books and The Just So Stories. Admirers of Kipling’s genius and lovers of literature in general will appreciate this rare glimpse into his extraordinary world.

I was going to buy an ebook version of it and print it out (being as I can’t read a book on a screen for shit) but apparently, you CAN’T because of stupid copyright laws. I don’t even understand that — you just not only paid TWICE the cost of the book in print, but you OWN the stupid thing. So question: is there ANY way to actually print an ebook out? Any way? Anything?

It was founded by former Microsoft managers Jason Allen and Scott Collison in 2004 and joined by the developer Robin Luckey. As of October 2008 the site lists 19,500+ projects. On May 28, 2009, Ohloh was acquired by SourceForge. The codebase history informs about the amount of activity for each project. Software stacks (list of software applications used by Ohloh's members) and tags are used to calculate the similarity between projects. Ohloh also offers an download service. Global statistics per language measure the popularity of specific programming languages since the early 90s. Those global statistics across all projects in Ohloh have also been used to identify those with the most extensive continuous revision control histories. Contributor statistics are also available, measuring open source developers' experience as observable in code committed to revision control repositories. Chapters: Google Earth, Youtube, Google Maps, Google Books, Orkut, Mapreduce, Blogger, Google Code, Cassandra, Google Reader, Bigtable, Hbase, Hypertable. Excerpt: BigTable is a compressed , high performance, and proprietary database system built on Google File System (GFS), Chubby Lock Service , and a few other Google programs; it is currently not distributed or used outside of Google, although Google offers access to it as part of their Google App Engine . History BigTable development began in 2004 and is now used by a number of Google applications, such as MapReduce , which is often used for generating and modifying data stored in BigTable , Google Reader , Google Maps , Google Book Search , "My Search History", Google Earth , Blogger.com , Google Code hosting, Orkut , YouTube , and Gmail . Google's reasons for developing its own database include scalability, and better control of performance characteristics. Design BigTable is a fast and extremely large-scale DBMS . However, it departs from the typical convention of a fixed number of columns, instead described by the authors as "a sparse, distributed multi-dimensional sorted map", sharing characteristics of both row-oriented and column-oriented databases. BigTable is designed to scale into the petabyte range across "hundreds or thousands of machines, and to make it easy to add more machines the system and automatically start taking advantage of those resources without any reconfiguration". Each table has multiple dimensions (one of which is a field for time, allowing for versioning and garbage collection ). Tables are optimized for GFS by being split into multiple tablets - segments of the table as split along a row chosen such that the tablet will be ~200 megabytes in size. When sizes threaten to grow beyond a specified limit, the t...

Known for its clear presentation of the formal elements of literature and literary analysis, this compact anthology effectively balances classic, modern, and contemporary works across the three major genres, blending well-known writers with a diverse gathering of newer, international figures. This literary breadth is supplemented by extensive coverage of writing about literature, making this book an excellent text for introduction to literature courses as well as literature-based composition courses.
The Norton Anthology of PoetryLong the classic anthology of poetry in English, The Norton Anthology of Poetry, Fifth Edition, adds to its wealth of known and loved poems a rich gathering of new poetry. Beginning with Beowulf, newly represented by selections from Seamus Heaney's dazzling translation, and continuing to the present day, The Norton Anthology of Poetry includes 1,100 poems by 250 poets in the Shorter Edition. Many major figures—from Chaucer and Shakespeare to Ashbery and Walcott—have expanded sections, and a range of outstanding younger voices have been newly added. Concise annotations, biographical sketches, an Essay on Versification by Jon Stallworthy, and, new to this edition, an Essay on Poetic Syntax by Margaret Ferguson help readers understand and enjoy the poems.
Literature: An Introduction to Fiction, Poetry, Drama, and Writing, Compact Interactive Edition (6th Edition)Literature, Compact Interactive Edition comes automatically with MyLiteratureLab, Longman's multimedia website. Literature is written in an engaging style that reflects the warm personal voice of X. J. Kennedy and Dana Gioia. Some of the changes to the new edition include conversations between Dana Gioia and celebrated fiction writer Amy Tan, U. S. Poet Laureate Kay Ryan, and contemporary playwright David Ives; the addition of new writers including Naguib Mahfouz, Virginia Woolf, Sherman Alexie, Mary Oliver, Bettie Sellers, and Anne Deavere Smith; and every chapter concludes with a review of key terms for easy reference. The Writing section has been thoroughly updated to reflect MLA’s latest guidelines.
Poetry: A Pocket Anthology (Penguin Academics) (6th Edition)Brief and affordable, this pocket-sized anthology focus on the poems at a cost well under that of traditional anthologies. Chronologically organized, the selections represent the full range of poetic tradition from popular ballads to contemporary work. Diversity and flexibility are reflected in the selections by women and writers of color—representing over a third of the book—and by the inclusion of virtually every traditional poetic form used in English-language poetry. Updates include twenty-five new selections from previously unrepresented poets, as well as different offerings from previously anthologized writers. Contemporary poets new to this anthology include Joseph Harrison, Brian Turner, Allison Joseph, Sophie Hannah, and Emily Moore. New poems represent poets ranging from Donne, Poe, Whitman, and Hardy, to modernists including Wallace Stevens, e.e. cummings, Edna St. Vincent Millay, and Richard Wilbur.
The Norton Anthology of Modern and Contemporary Poetry, Volume 2: Contemporary Poetry"The most acute rendering of an era's sensibility is its poetry," wrote the editors in their preface to the first edition. Thirty years later, this innovative, cover-to-cover revision renders with fresh eyes and meticulous care the remarkable range of styles, subjects, and voices in English-language poetry. The newly titled Norton Anthology of Modern and Contemporary Poetry—now available in two paperback volumes—includes 1,596 poems by 195 poets (half of the poems are new), from Walt Whitman and Thomas Hardy in the late nineteenth century to Anne Carson and Sherman Alexie in the twenty-first. The Norton Anthology of Modern and Contemporary Poetry continues to be the most comprehensive collection of twentieth-century poetry in English. It richly represents the major figures, while also giving full voice to ethnic American poetries, experimental traditions, postcolonial poetry, and the long poem, eclipsing all other anthologies in scope, clarity, and balance.
A Poetry HandbookWith passion, wit, and good common sense, the celebrated poet Mary Oliver tells of the basic ways a poem is built--meter and rhyme, form and diction, sound and sense. Drawing on poems from Robert Frost, Elizabeth Bishop, and others, the Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award winner imparts an extraordinary amount of information in a short space.

Print-on-Demand Book Publishing: A New Approach To Printing And Marketing Books For Publishers And Self-Publishing AuthorsThe basic business model of the book publishing industry remained largely unchanged between the Great Depression and the turn of the Millennium. Print a lot of books, try to get them reviewed so that stores would stock them on consignment, advertise, then hope that they don't come back as returns. Small imprints and self-publishers were reduced to begging distributors to accept their titles at discounts of 60% or more, and were expected to accept returns in any condition and quantity. Print-on-demand book publishing, combined with short-discount distribution and Internet marketing, is turning the publishing business on its head. For the first time, authors are finding that they can launch their own publishing businesses and earn more from their writing than they would with a major trade publisher. Small imprints can invest their scarce resources in acquiring, designing and promoting new titles, rather than gambling on tons of books that cost money to keep in inventory. This book details the new method with which authors and publishers alike can use POD to cut costs and increase profits, while reaching new readers through the magic of Internet marketing.
Symmetry: A Design System For Quiltmakers - Print on Demand EditionIn this book, Ruth guides the quiltmaker in exploring and developing truly original designs. She presents 17 new quilts based upon the 17 pattern concepts, and she leads the reader through the fun of applying the concepts to the creation of new quilts. Her students have often called this process the most useful design workshop they have ever taken. For the beginning designer, she presents the possibilities inherent in very simple asymmetric block designs. Each chapter presents a new block design and a new concept, illustrated by a quilt shown in color, with templates, yardage chart, and directions. Each of the new blocks can be used in other symmetries to produce new patterns. And each of the concepts can be applied to thousands of other blocks. Note: The printing quality in this copy may vary from the original offset printing edition and may look more saturated due to printing on demand by a high-quality printer on uncoated paper. The information presented in this version is the same as the most recent printed edition. Any pattern pullouts have been separated and presented as single pages.
